Greetings fellow adventurers! Are you ready for an expedition into wild and untamed lands? The year of the Mammoth has started for Hearthstone players, and the first expansion is about to uncovered. Travel alongside Elise Starseeker to a plane where time stands still and prehistoric, magic infused beasts run rampant. 135 new cards are waiting to be unearthed along with new card effects. Join us as we discuss some of the new cards and features in Hearthstone’s Journey to Un’Goro.
New Minion Type
As suggested, the year of the mammoth is centered around the mesozoic era. Massive dinosaurs, murderous flora and various Elementals will be discovered when you start opening Un’Goro packs. Elemental-type cards will be introduced (and some updated) with Un’Goro. This means that some of the older cards, such as Water Elemental, will instead of being classified as “minions”, be knows as “Elementals”. This also goes for Frost Elemental, both Magma & Ice Ragers, both Ragnaros cards, Al’Akir the Windlord and more. Un’Goro will also be releasing quite a few new cards of this type, such as the new mage legendary, Pyros.
New Minion Ability
One unique trait that makes the creatures of Un’Goro so adept at survival, is their adaptability. To honour those evolving beasts, Hearthstone minions are getting a new battlecry ability; The ability to adapt. What this means is that when a creature with Adapt is successfully summoned, you will discover and choose one of 10 possible effects, including Taunt, Attack buffs, Divine Shield and Deathrattle. There will also be spells that can trigger minions to gain and activate the Adapt ability.
Another new mechanic coming with Un’Goro are Quest Cards. These “Legendary spells” will always be in your starting hand, provided they were included in your deck. They are 1 cost spells that sit on top of your hero portrait, similar to Secret spells. These however are not hidden from your opponent, as they will be able to see which quest you are attempting to complete. The Quest Cards will have a condition that needs to be met before an action will occur. One Example of this is the Quest Card, “Awaken the Masters”, that rewards the player with the Legendary minion “Amara, Warden of Hope” once 7 Deathrattle minions have been played.
With League of Explorers, Blackrock Mountain and The Grand Tournament falling out of rotation soon, deck construction will once more become a fresh and exciting experience (that is, until the meta kicks in). With great synergies and combinations coming in with Journey to Un’Goro, and the other expansions due later this year, Hearthstone will keep being an interesting and ever-changing game. Un’Goro will release in early April, but the pre-purchase bundle is available now. If you buy it on the Android store, the expansion costs R599, and includes 50 packs and an Un’Goro card back. The next batch of card reveals will be somewhere in March, so be sure to check back regularly for updates.
