The streak continues for Xbox and Microsoft, as they once again give us cream of the crop content this March. So far, 2017 has been great for Xbox Live gamers and it seems to be getting better and better with every passing month. This month’s Games with Gold titles will have you gyrating like windsocks in a hurricane. As always, these games are free to download for Xbox Live Gold members, and will only be available between specified dates. So without delay, here are March’s Games with Gold.
Layers of Fear
Do you enjoy the occasional horror? Do you take your midnight bathroom break in complete darkness? Do you hate puppies and ice cream? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then this game will whet your appetite. Layers of Fear is a psychedelic indie horror released by Aspyr Media in February 2016. You play the role of a painter whose only apparent goal is the completion of his magnum opus. As you trek through a chilling Victorian era house in search of the tools and answers you need to complete your work, you start to uncover small truths pertaining to your character and his mental faculties.
Layers of Fear plays out in first person and is, for the most part, a puzzle game. The game is filled with suspense, and jump-scares were tactfully placed throughout the game. While not quite on the Resident Evil 7 scale, this game will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Layers of Fear will be available for download from 1 – 31 March.
Here’s an interesting one. Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer game that goes down in one of two ways. You’re either a rapidly evolving beast, so adept at killing that the Grim Reaper bought timeshare. Or you’re one of four hunters dedicated to schooling the beast on the meaning of extinction. As a hunter you have a special ability; there are at least 3 other people to feed to it whilst hoping it chokes on a spinal chord in the process.
On a serious note, the game is more challenging than it appears. It requires teamwork for the humans as opposed to pure bravado and skill as the monster. Playing as a hunter takes place in a first-person perspective, while the monster is played in third. It is a definite addition to any game collection and not just because of the game’s unique nature.
Evolve will be available for download from 16 March – 15 April.
Borderlands 2 is the sequel to the smash hit game released by 2K Games; Borderlands. Combining elements of a role-playing game and a first person shooter, Borderlands games make for a fantastic gaming experience. Winner of several Game of the Year awards, and with over 13 million copies sold, it is easy to understand why we are so excited to get this gem.
The gameplay is light-hearted and comical, which is balanced out effectively through intense combat sequences. Playing as one of 4 professional Vault Hunters, you have to fend off raiders, survive the harsh conditions of the badlands, and complete a plethora of missions while working your way to finding a legendary treasure. Borderlands 2 was a massive commercial success, and is well worth a download recommendation this month.
Borderlands 2 will be available for download from 1 – 15 March.
If you remember Battle City back in the days of the NES, then you might enjoy Heavy Weapon. Created by PopCap Games (most known for their other games, Plants vs Zombies and Bejeweled), Heavy Weapon is a side-scroller game in which all you do is shoot down the armaments of the Red Star army. Almost an affront to the Soviet Union, you stand alone against the forces of Communism. Your weapon of choice is a tank, but far be it from normal. As if a Panzer itself wasn’t enough, your tank has a shield, and is nuclear missile-launching capable. As you play through a level to it’s eventual end, you will fight a boss, which usually has an array of weapons and defences that you have to deal with. After defeating the boss you will be transported to the armoury, where you can equip and purchase a variety of upgrades and power-ups. Heavy Weapon is also co-op friendly, supporting multiplayer games of up to 4 people.
Heavy Weapon will be available for download from 16 – 31 March.
