rAge Expo 2016: Day One Highlights

Being at rAge this year has left me with one wish: The ability to create shadow clones. There is so much to see and so much happening simultaneously that it makes seeing everything a daunting task. The air remains thick from the  atmosphere of excitement buzzing around, everywhere one goes. Here are some of the epic highlights and iconic events from rAge Expo 2016: Day One.

As always, rAge is packed to the brim with all sorts of geek-kind goodies. Clothing, games, novelty gifts and hardware surrounds one in a beautiful landscape of technological advancement. You can get your hands on games and online gaming subscriptions (Xbox Live Gold & PlayStation Plus) at ridiculously lowered prices. Check out the BT Games stand to buy titles from as little as R99,90. Furthermore there is a metric ton of geek culture clothing, bobble heads and figurines (basically, any kind of memorabilia). Be sure to look at every stand to see what they offer. You’ll definitely find something endearing.

The number one reason why the majority of rAgers attend every year: Games. There is a monitor virtually everywhere for you to try your hand at an upcoming or newly released title. There are also prizes to be won for partaking so give it a shot if you’re feeling confident.

There are lines of people at the PlayStation stand at any given time, but with very good reason. Titles playable on the show floor include:  LEGO Dimensions, Gran Turismo Sport, Batman: Return to Arkham, World of Warriors and Gravity Rush 2. In addition to all these epic titles be sure, to check out PlayStation VR for what could be your best experience at rAge this year.

Passing the Xbox stand might leave you perplexed, as it may feel like you’re at a Foo Fighters concert. Supporters went mad, because Xbox crew members started lobbing merchandise into the crowd.  Another mass of excitement erupted during the FIFA 17 tournament in which the grand prize was R100 000. Games playable on the Xbox show floor include: FIFA 17, Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War 4. There is also a competition for playing Gears. Up for grabs is a customised Gears of War 4 Xbox One controller, and of course, a copy of the game (For each player). The requirement is simple in theory: Make it to wave 50 in a 5 person Horde match. This is rather hard, so scrape together a good team if you intend to claim those prizes.

CWL Mag Cup
The Call of Duty World League (CWL) MAG Cup was opened by some local celebrities. The Red Team consisted of: Jason Goliath (Comedian), Rohan Janse van Rensburg (Gauteng Lions Centre), Jack Parow (You know who he is) and their captain “Jakes” (COD Pro Gamer). The blue team consisted of: Deep Fried Man (Comedian), Pippa Tshabalala (Writer & Presenter), Ruan Ackermann (Gauteng Lions Flanker) and their captain “Tanker” (COD Pro Gamer).

This mix of personalities lead to some very interesting moments. The comedians tried to outwit each other and the professional rugby players threatened to “Pwn some nubz”, the latter of which being very comical. Claiming his victory before the match, Jack Parow received a boxing glove beatdown as a result. This was probably the most amusing thing to witness. Be sure to check out the rest of the gaming tournaments in the following days for more explosive entertainment.

There is always an impressive turnout of cosplayers at rAge, and this year is no different. From elegantly simple, to pompously elaborate, all kinds of costumes appeared this year. Many of the cosplayers have multiple outfits for each day at rAge, meaning there will definitely be a wider variety every day you go. Cosplaying brings forth a magical sensation to the expo, in that it feels like walking beside ones heroes. We can’t wait to see more of it in the next two days.
